The decision by South Sudan's electoral commission to rewrite the voter list in south Kordofan has been met with much approval by the SPLM, after complaints that the list did not incorporate the entire population

The south's Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) welcomed the electoral commission's decision to rewrite the list of voters for the state of south Kordofan with international, regional and local observers.

Kordofan's elections were postponed from last April to February because preparations were not complete.

An advisor to the chief of the SPLM, Qamar Delman told Ahram Online that the movement welcomed the decision to rewrite the list on 24 January.

The decision was described as objective and the SPLM maintained that if the commission remains open to dialogue with all political parties, south Sudan would be well on its way to free and fair elections.

The SPLM advisor said that there would have to be international observers, recalling the fraud committed last elections.

Delman stressed that the underlying reason behind the large influx of security forces into the region is to fraudulently register for the vote and give their support for the north's National Congress Party.

He added that these security individuals had already exercised their electoral right when they were in the north and should therefore not participate again in these supplementary elections. When registering, the commission must bear this in mind to avoid constitutional and electoral errors, Delman appealed.

The Blue Nile state and that of south Kordofan are subject to the People's Consultation Act designated by the 2005 peace agreement which ended a 22 year-long civil war.

The peoples of both states will decide whether the application of the peace treaty has been satisfactory and will make observations regarding their relationship with the central government in Khartoum.

The SPLM's candidate for the state's ruler or 'Al Waly' is Abdul-Aziz Adam Al-Helw who currently holds the position.
