The PFLP has asked Hamas to put the interests of the Palestinian people in Gaza above any other consideration and hold local elections promptly
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) has urged Hamas to conduct local elections in the Gaza Strip.
Top PFLP figure Gameel Mazhar said Hamas must sincerely consider holding local elections since it is a service-based, not political, move and wouldn't affect efforts towards unity. He insisted the Palestinian people must be given the opportunity to choose who provides services to them.
Mazhar urged Hamas to contest the elections and put the interests of the Palestinian people above all other considerations, emphasising that such elections would be a prelude to unity, asking the movement to facilitate the elections as an important step towards upcoming presidential or legislative polls.
Palestinian local elections are set to take place 20 October, at least in the West Bank. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said elections would take place in the West Bank whether or not Gaza also holds them.
