The first of six batteries of Patriot missiles deployed in Turkey to protect against a spillover of the conflict in neighbouring Syria has become operational, NATO said Saturday.

"The first of six Patriot missile batteries deploying to Turkey was declared operational and placed under the command and control of NATO on Saturday, 26 January," it said in a statement.
