US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet members of Libya's opposition national council in Paris ahead of G8 talks on the Libyan conflict, a US official said on Monday.

Clinton, in Paris for talks with her counterparts from seven other major powers, plans to meet the representatives of the council on Monday or early Tuesday, said the official, who asked not to be named.

France has formally recognised the council as Libya's legitimate representatives and the European Union has agreed to talk to them.

The Group of Eight powers -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and Russia -- were gathering to discuss proposals for a no-fly zone to ground the warplanes pounding Libya's rebel forces.
