Unknown assailants opened fire Friday on a security checkpoint in the north Sinai city of Arish, injuring one soldier, state news agency MENA reported.

The soldier, Al-Sayed Mohamed Zaki, 22, was shot twice and immediately transported to the nearest hospital.

North Sinai has witnessed increasing attacks on police and army personnel since the overthrow of Muslim Brotherhood-backed Mohamed Morsi from the presidency.

According to interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim, 11 security personnel have been killed in the peninisula since Morsi’s ouster on 3 July.

A security source told MENA on Thursday that an army offensive killed 10 Islamist militants over a period of 48 hours.

Both the army and the police have released statements confirming that reinforcements have been sent to Sinai in order to eliminate the Jihadist militants.

A security vacuum has existed in Sinai ever since a popular uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
