Hillary Clinton visits Tahrir Square

After talks with leading interim-government ministers, Clinton visited Tahrir Square, hoping to glimpse what was the focal point of the 25 January uprising


This morning US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton toured Tahrir Square, the focal point of the Egyptian uprising which led to the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak. Walking with several security officials, Clinton managed to shake hands with people in the street.

Clinton visited Tahrir Square after her meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil El-Arabi. During their meeting, Clinton announced the US’s willingness to support Egypt through $90 million worth of aid and discussed cooperation between the two countries, emphasising the crucial role of Egypt in the region.

Clinton then met with the Head of the Supreme Military Council Field Marchal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

Clinton has expressed her appreciation of the January 25 revolution which has astonished the whole world.

A day earlier, the 25 January youth coalition refused to meet with the American top diplomat.
