Former Brotherhood MP Hamdy Hassan arrested in Alexandria

Hamdy Hassan and other leading Brotherhood and FJP figures were arrested on Sunday evening on charges of inciting violence


A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, was arrested on Sunday.

The party announced on its official Facebook page that HamdyHassan, a leading party member in Alexandria and a former MP, had been arrested by security forces late on Sunday, along withMagdyEl-Bahyand Ahmed El-Nilly, two leading Brotherhood figures.

"Around 28 leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested by security forces across Egypt accused of incitement and violence; among these eight are from the top guidance bureau," said Brotherhood lawyer Ali Kamal.

Around 3,500 supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi have been arrested since the dispersal of two large pro-Morsi protest camps on Wednesday, according to Muslim Brotherhood lawyer Mustafa El-Demeery. Around 450 of the detained have reportedly been released.

Those still detained include Morsi himself, the Brotherhood’s deputy chairman Khairat El-Shater, and head of the FJP Saad El-Katatni.
