Tunisian rappers, Weld el 15 and Klay BBJ, arrested on stage while performing at International Festival of Hammamet on Thursday

On Thursday 22 August, during the International Festival of Hammamet, security forces interrupted the performance of Tunisian rappers Weld el 15 and Klay BBJ, arresting them for allegedly insulting security forces in their songs.

In a video by the group Nawaat, security forces are seen to arrest the rappers, taking them into custody.

The two rappers were released after having their identification cards confiscated, and will be waiting to hear from authorities concerning the charges they will face.

One of the rappers, Weld el 15, know as Ala Yaacoubi, who was sentenced to two years for a song in which he insulted the police, had been freed after criticism was directed at the governing coalition led by the moderate Islamist Ennahda party.

Yaacoubi was imprisoned on 13 June for his video clip “Boulicia Kleb,” meaning “Police are Dogs,” only to be freed on 2 July.

The 25-year-old musician used harsh lyrics in the song to criticise the police, accusing them of using excessive force against ordinary people.
