Boat carrying Syrian, Palestinian refugees sinks near Alexandria coast; coast guard rescues 116 passengers, including four Egyptians
Twelve dead bodies were found by the Alexandria coast guard on Friday after an illegal boat carrying 150 Syrian and Palestinian refugees, as well several Egyptians, sank in the Mediterranean, Al-Ahram's Arabic website reported.
The coast guard managed to rescue 116 passengers, including 40 Syrian refugees, 72 Palestinian refugees, and four Egyptians.
Over the past two years, many Syrian and Palestinian refugees have attempted to illegally immigrate to Europe through Egypt. A number of ships have sunk in the Mediterranean's rough waters while in transit.
