A Saudi writer, close to the royal family, has flatly dismissed reports released by WikiLeaks indicating that King Abdullah encouraged the US to strike Iran

A Saudi writer has dismissed a document released by WikiLeaks on Sunday night indicating that King Abdullah urged the US to strike Iran.

Anwar Maged Eshki, a director of the Middle East Centre for Strategic and Legal Studies in Riyadh, said in a phone call with Ahram Online, "according to our knowledge of Saudi policy, I ruled out what WikiLeaks published”, adding that “King Abdullah has always been against any war in the region.”

Eshki, who is a close associate to Saudi royal circles said, “we need to analyse what was published on the site and find out whether these claims are documented or not.”

WikiLeaks released documents cables signed by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia repeatedly pressing the United States to “cut off the head of the snake” by launching military strikes to destroy Iran's nuclear programme.

A copy of the cable, dated 20 April 2008, was published in The New York Times website on Sunday after being released by WikiLeaks.

According to The New York Times, the more than 250,000 documents, given to five media agencies by the whistle-blowing website, provide candid and at times critical views of foreign leaders as well as sensitive information on terrorism and nuclear proliferation filed by US diplomats.
