Although the title of the new release by Egypt’s Supreme Council for Culture (SCC) focuses on the Sadat era, its author – Russian affairs specialist Abdul-Alim Youssef Abdul-Alim – provides an overview of the entire history of the political relations between the two nations since their onset circa 1939.
Abdel-Alim argues that Egyptian-Soviet relations reached their peak during the rule of president Nasser (1954-1970) and devotes an entire chapter to the study of their deterioration with the 1971 arrival of president Sadat in office, the latter having expelled the thousands of Soviet experts working in Egypt at the time.
As a pivotal event in reshaping political relations between Egypt and both the United States and the then Soviet Union, the October 1973 War also occupies a considerable segment in Al-Elaqat Al-Misriya Al-Sovietiya: ‘Ahd Al-Sadat 1970-1981 (Egyptian-Soviet Relations: The Sadat Era 1970-1981).
In his book, the author interestingly highlights the difficulties he faced, specifically at Egyptian Foreign Ministry archives, during his attempts to obtain historical documents pertaining to his subject matter, which forced him to obtain the required documents from American and British archives.
