Protesters chant against Muslim Brotherhood and Qatari ambassador, call for severing of ties with the Gulf state

Tens of protesters have gathered in front of the Qatari embassy in Giza's Dokki district to demand Egypt sever diplomatic ties with the Gulf state.

Protesters chanted against the Qatari ambassador and the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Several other protests have taken place at the embassy to condemn Qatar's alleged interference in Egyptian domestic affairs and its support for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Qatar was a firm backer of the Muslim Brotherhood and lent or gave Egypt $7.5 billion during ousted president Mohamed Morsi's year in power.

Last Saturday, Egypt summoned Qatar's envoy in Cairo to protest Doha's interference in Egyptian internal affairs.

Saturday's move came after Doha's criticism of Egypt's crackdown on Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

An Egyptian foreign ministry source told London-based Al-Hayat newspaper that Egypt's ambassador in Qatar would be summoned for “consultation” after the upcoming constitution referendum, which for expats takes place between 8 and 12 January.
