Art Alert: Jordanian singer Macadi Nahhas to perform in Cairo
Ahram Online, Friday 11 Apr 2014
Macadi Nahhas returns to Cairo's Al-Genaina Theatre on Friday 18 April as part of the venue's early spring programme

“Singing is the best way to express myself, who I am, as Macadi,” Nahhas had revealed to Ahram Online during an interview conducted in September 2012 when this captivating and soft-spoken Jordanian singer visited Cairo to perform at Left Bank Café in Zamalek.

Performing on a variety of local stages, Nahhas also joins Egyptian musicians in her concerts. In December 2012, she performed side by side with Egypt's well-established Eftekasat band at El Sawy Culture wheel.

This time, Nahhas will return to Al-Genaina -- where she performed in 2010 -- to take part in the theatre's early spring programme, an initiative hosting Egyptian, Jordanian and Palestinian musicians between 10 and 18 April. Nahhas' concert is the last in the sequence of Arab musicians.

Nahhas' music does not stick to one genre; using her powerful voice, she borrows from other genres to ultimately create a contemporary sound, with roots in Arabic classics.

Through the years, Nahhas grew attuned to different styles of music, such as jazz and classical music, as well as the more contemporary directions. Performing on stages across the world, from the neighbouring Beirut, to Dubai in the Gulf, to the cultural hub of Montreal (she mentions that travelling is one of her favourite things about her job) she learned from global artists. Her music, while reflecting her Arab heritage, bears influences from many other cultures.
