In a phone call on Monday, El-Sisi emphasized that these efforts aim to protect the civilians in Gaza who are enduring tragic humanitarian conditions, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

El-Sisi underscored the need for the international community to exert pressure to implement relevant United Nations resolutions.

The phone call also addressed efforts to prevent further expansion of the conflict, which has been looming over the region, the spokesman said. This could have serious consequences for the Middle East as well as international peace and security, the spokesman added.

El-Sisi and Scholz stressed the two-state solution as the foundation for restoring regional peace, security, and stability.

The German chancellor also commended Egypt’s constructive role in the region as he discussed regional developments during his conversation with El-Sisi.

Meanwhile, head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel met with US Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns and Head Israel's Mossad David Barnea on Sunday to pursue a truce agreement between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office described the meeting between the intelligence officials as “constructive,” but acknowledged the existence of “significant gaps” that will be addressed in further meetings this week.

The meeting took place in Europe, the office said without specifying the precise location. Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdul-Rahman Al-Thani was present.

The meeting took place amid mounting international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and ongoing mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar, who serve as key intermediaries between Hamas and Israel, to bring an end to the bloodshed that has persisted since 7 October.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden held phone conversations with Egypt’s President El-Sisi and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to discuss the situation in Gaza.

The discussions focused on joint efforts to secure the immediate release of all remaining captives held by Hamas and establish a “prolonged” humanitarian pause in the fighting, according to the White House.
