Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" has been one of Egypt’s most reliable players for more than a decade.
While he may not possess the same flair or attacking brilliance as Mohamed Salah, Trezeguet has built his reputation on relentless work rate, physical commitment and consistency. His repeated runs, aerial ability and willingness to track back make him an invaluable asset for both club and country. His trademark curling strikes have often proved decisive in key matches for Egypt and Al Ahly, while his fighting spirit and leadership have earned him widespread respect in the dressing room.
With 96 international appearances before the World Cup, Trezeguet played a central role in Egypt’s runs to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2017 and 2021. Alongside Salah and Mohamed El Shenawy, he is also one of the few members of the current squad with World Cup experience, having featured at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
He was a key figure in Egypt’s historic qualification for that World Cup, winning the dramatic stoppage-time penalty that Salah converted to secure the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 1990.
A product of Ahly’s youth academy, Trezeguet continued his development in Europe with Anderlecht, Kasımpaşa, Aston Villa and Trabzonspor before a spell with Al Rayyan in Qatar. He returned to his boyhood club in the summer of 2025.
Few have ever doubted his talent, although some observers believe he could have achieved even more during his career. Former Egypt international Ahmed Hossam Mido once said: “I've always said that Trezeguet possessed immense talent and that his career perhaps didn't live up to his potential. For me, he's an example of the impact an agent can have on a career.”
Now approaching the latter stages of his career, Trezeguet remains driven by the same determination and passion that have defined him for years. The World Cup offers him another opportunity to showcase the qualities that have made him one of the most enduring figures of his generation.
