Mohamed El-Shenawy is a long-standing goalkeeper, though he has recently seen his position come under pressure from teammate Mostafa Shobier, who has featured more regularly in the Ahly and Egypt line-ups.
Born in El-Hamoul in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate and developed through the youth ranks of Ahly, El-Shenawy rose to become Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper and one of Africa’s most accomplished shot-stoppers.
El-Shenawy became Egypt’s undisputed No. 1 after making his major tournament debut at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Over the years, El-Shenawy has cemented his place among Egypt’s most important goalkeepers. He was a key figure in the Pharaohs’ run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2022 and the final round of qualification for the 2022 World Cup, providing leadership and consistency during periods of transition within the national team.
He is one of three players in the Egypt squad to have featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, alongside Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud “Trezeguet” Hassan.
Now in the latter stages of his career, El-Shenawy remains part of Egypt’s goalkeeping setup and one of the team’s most influential leaders. Success at a major international tournament would provide the crowning achievement for a career already distinguished by domestic and continental glory.
