Few Egyptian players of his generation possess the range of qualities found in Emam Ashour.
An elegant yet explosive midfielder, Ashour combines technical ability, vision and the capacity to change a match with a single moment of inspiration. Equally comfortable dictating the tempo or producing a decisive goal or assist, he is renowned for his powerful shooting with either foot.
Ashour first emerged at Ghazl El Mahalla then moved to Haras El Hodoud, but it was at Zamalek that he established himself among the country’s elite. He helped the club win the Egyptian Premier League titles in 2021 and 2022 and quickly became one of the competition’s standout performers.
His rise earned him a move to Danish side FC Midtjylland in early 2023, though the spell in Europe lasted only a few months. His return to Egypt later that year caused a stir when he joined Al Ahly, the fierce rivals of his former club.
At Ahly, Ashour quickly became a central figure in midfield, playing an important role in the club’s domestic and continental successes, including the 2024 African Champions League triumph and subsequent league titles. In 2025, he finished as the Egyptian league’s top scorer with 13 goals, an unusual achievement for a midfielder.
Ashour made his Egypt debut in November 2021, but his international career has been less straightforward. Injuries and disciplinary issues have at times disrupted his progress, and he has yet to consistently reproduce his club form for the national team.
As the World Cup approaches, the attacking midfielder is still working his way back to peak condition. If Ashour reaches his best form at the right time, he could become one of the Pharaohs’ most important weapons on football’s biggest stage.
