Omar Gaber used to occupy the right-back position in Egypt's starting line-up but he could provide a different option this time around.

Given that he mainly played as a left-back for big-spending Pyramids FC in the Egyptian Premier League this season, Egypt coach Javier Aguirre is likely to rely on him in the same role, especially because of the lack of reliable options in this position.

The 27-year-old made 28 league appearances this season, helping Pyramids mount a mild challenge for the league title.

He is set to compete with Ahly's Ayman Ashraf for the left-back position. He will also act as a back-up for Aston Villa's Ahmed Elmohamady, who is Aguirre's preferred option on the right.

Gaber came through the youth ranks of Egypt's Zamalek, making his first senior appearance in 2010 before delivering a series of superb performances to become a fan favourite until his departure to Swiss side Basel FC in May 2016.

He was a favourite option for former coach Bob Bradley, who was in charge of Egypt from 2011 and 2013. Gaber also played under the American boss in a brief loan spell with Los Angeles FC.

Gaber was mainly used as a substitute at the 2017 Nations Cup, playing just 14 minutes in the semi-final win over Burkina Faso.
