Qualification: After a close pursuit from Ireland, Portugal sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup on the final qualifying matchday with a crushing 9–1 win over Armenia, capped by a hat-trick from midfielder João Neves.

Coach: Spaniard Roberto Martínez previously managed Wales and English clubs Everton and Wigan, but made his name above all as Belgium manager (2016–2022), guiding them to the semi-finals of the Russia World Cup. Since taking charge of Portugal in 2023, A Seleção were eliminated in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on penalties against France, but went on to win the 2025 UEFA Nations League, beating Germany in the semi-finals and Spain in the final.

Star player: Portugal boast a constellation of talent, including an exceptional midfield featuring Champions League winners Vitinha and João Neves of PSG, and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes — named Player of the Year in the Premier League. But all eyes remain on legend Cristiano Ronaldo, now 41, who is heading into what would be a record-breaking sixth World Cup. No longer as explosive as before, the Al-Nassr forward since 2023 has reclaimed his starting place after being benched in both the last-16 and quarter-final at Qatar 2022, and is driven by his ambition to win the one major title that has eluded him.

Ambitions: Despite winning Euro 2016, Portugal have often fallen short at World Cups — their best finish remains the third place achieved in 1966, their very first appearance, under the legendary Eusébio. After beating Spain in last year's Nations League final, and backed by strength across the board, Portugal are expected to go deep, even if Roberto Martínez prefers to frame them as "a contender, but not the frontrunner" for the world title.
