Dozens of employees of the Egyptian national authority for social security demonstrated on Saturday against a law regulating the civil service which was passed earlier this year, demanding the authority be excluded from the law's jurisdiction, reported Al-Ahram Arabic website.
The law was passed in March with the aim of curbing notorious bureaucratic inefficiencies by reforming Egypt’s administrative apparatus and streamlining hiring practices and wage-structures in governmental institutions.
The law applies to the seven million employees of government institutions in Egypt. State-owned companies and independent economic entities are excluded from the law.
Tax authority employees failed to reach a deal with the country’s prime minister during negotiations last week to exclude them from the law's provisions. Thousands of civil servants, mostly tax authority employees, staged a protest last month to condemn the law.
The independent union for tax authority employees called for demonstrations on Sunday in around 300 tax commissions across the country.
Several other groups of government employees are expected to join the tax authority employees in demonstrations on 12 September.
