The local councils have been dismantled
The premises of all local councils in the Upper Egyptian province of Asyut have been handed over to the governorate’s office, pursuant to the court verdict returned late in June that ordered the dismantling of all local councils across Egypt. The dismantling of the pre-revolution local councils, widely believed to be hotbeds of corruption and the former, disbanded ruling party, has been one of the basic demands put forward by the revolutionary and pro-democracy political forces of the country.
Governor Ibrahim Hamed ordered the establishment of a committee, headed by Major General Yakook Hassan, to be responsible for taking over the 80 local council headquarters in Asyut governorate.
Employees in local councils were told to wrap up unfinished cases until their fate is determined.
