According to Walid Gaber, the theatre’s performance halls manager, the damage was limited to the decorative ceiling within the theatre.
“The pressure from the ice falling on the roof caused parts of the inner ceiling to fall. We are working on fixing the damage. The engineering management is here as well as the theatre’s director,” Gaber says. “It’s something that should be managed and fixed over the next few months.”
“No electrical accidents occurred as the theatre’s director ordered for shutting down the power supply when the rain started. Alexandria already had a drainage problem that can cause floods of some lower rooms, so we learned to be careful,” Gaber said.
He also stated that the theatre didn’t have any scheduled events at the time, as it was “already closed for restoration of the theatre halls.”
In 1998, the theatre was named after the renowned Alexandrian poet Bairam El-Tonsy, commemorating 100 years since his birthdate.
The Bairam El-Tonsy Theatre has hosted many important performances by well-known actors, including Adel Emam, Said Saleh, Sherihan, and others.
The theatre has two floors, with 25 rooms for actors and performers, a carpentry workshop, storage rooms, a cafeteria, as well as a VIP hall and other multifunctional rooms.
