Zambia got a first-leg advantage in the African World Cup qualifiers after claiming a 1-0 away win over Sudan on Wednesday thanks to ZESCO forward Winston Kalengo who scored the winner in the 27th minute of the game.
Tuesday's victory will make Zambia's mission in the second-leg easier when they host Sudan in Lusaka on Sunday.
Similarly on the same day, Mozambique claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Gabon in a game that saw the absence of Borussia Dortmund's Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who missed the game due to injury.
A statement from the Gabonese Football Federation confirmed that the 26-year-old was sidelined and that further details over his injury will be released in the coming hours.
Aubameyang, who features on the shortlist for the African player of the year award, has been in great form with the Bundesliga side this season scoring 22 goals in 20 appearances.
Gabon are to host Mozambique in the second-leg on Saturday.
The winners of the second-round games will be drawn into five four-team groups, with the leaders directly reaching the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
