The American University in Cairo's Theatre Department presents its production of Tartuffe (or The Impostor), the classic comedy by iconic French playwright Moliere.
First performed in 1664 at the court of King Louis XIV, the satirical comedy centres on the hypocritical character Tartuffe, who through his pious demeanour deceives and tries to get title to his friend Orgon’s estate by sending him to jail.
His hypocrisy is apparent to some, while others remain oblivious to it, resulting in dangerous consequences for the family, which might be too late to save.
There were several silver screen adaptations of Tartuffe, in 1925, 1984, 1978 and 1977 as a television film.
Directed by Jane Page, the play will be performed by Ahmed Badran, Malak Yasser, Farida El Sabh, Sarah El Shazly, Yousif Najem, Mahmoud El Rayes, Mariam El Gendy, Jason Will, Farah El Toukhi, Ahmed El Sherbiny, Ameena Houta, and Ahmed Hani.
