Turkey will open an embassy in famine-hit Somalia, the Turkish prime minister announced Friday on a visit to the Horn of Africa country.
"We are opening an embassy in Somalia," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a news conference with the president of Somalia, which was broadcast live on the private NTV television.
The new embassy will facilitate coordination of Turkish aid to the country worst affected in the region by a prolonged drought, said Erdogan.
Erdogan accompanied by some of his Cabinet ministers toured Mogadishu on the first visit by a major leader in nearly 20 years to witness the devastation wrought by the famine in the Somali capital.
