Dutch free up Gaddafi funds for new Libyan rulers

Netherlands is thawing $2 billion in frozen assets and dispatching it to Libya's ruling council

The Dutch government says it is thawing €1.4 billion (US$2 billion) in frozen assets from the Gaddafi regime and sending the money to Libya's new rulers.

The Foreign Ministry says the money will be sent to the National Transitional Council, which will spend it on humanitarian relief including food and medicines as well as education and government salaries.

The United Nations sanctions committee approved the transfer.

Last month, the Netherlands sent €100 million of frozen Gadhafi funds to the World Health Organization to buy medicines for Libya.

The government says the money freed up Friday comes from Dutch accounts held by the Libyan Central Bank.
