Syria's state-run TV says an armed group has ambushed a bus with policemen, killing five and wounding 18 officers.
The TV says the attack occurred on Thursday in the southern province of Daraa where an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime started six months ago.
The revolt was inspired by uprisings in the Arab world that toppled autocratic rulers in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.
Assad has responded with a brutal crackdown, which the UN estimates has killed some 2,600 people.
Syria's regime disputes the accounts of civilian deaths and says it's fighting terrorists and thugs, not true reform seekers.
Assad's adviser Buthaina Shaaban claimed this week the toll was 1,400 dead, evenly split between security forces and the opposition.
