Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi has called for calm in Egypt, where deadly clashes raged for a third day on Monday, urging all political forces to press forward with the democratic process.
He expressed his "grave concern" over the deadly clashes in Cairo's Tahrir Square pitting police against demonstrators who want the end of military rule.
Arabi also urged all political forces "to work for calm, return to the political process and move forward with the process of democratic change based on the principles of freedom, dignity and social justice on which the January 25 Revolution was founded."
Since Saturday, police and military forces in Egypt have used batons, tear gas and birdshot to clear Tahrir Square of protesters. Hundreds have been injured.
On 28 November Egypt is to hold its first parliamentary elections since protests ended former president Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule in February, paving the way for the military to cede power to a civilian authority.
