Sameh Ashour has become the new chairman of the Egyptian Lawyers Syndicate following elections held on Sunday. On Monday, he was formally announced the winner.
The polling was held under judicial supervision.
Following his victory, Ashour stressed that the syndicate would play a major role in Egypt’s ongoing revolution by overseeing parliamentary elections slated for next week.
The syndicate will also serve Egypt’s democratic transition, he said, by being closely involved in the drafting of a new national constitution.
“The syndicate will support the revolution from now on,” the new chairman told a press conference held after election results were announced.
Commenting on the ongoing clashes in Tahrir Square between security forces and protesters, Ashour said: “We have to be unbiased now and verify facts before rendering judgments.”
