The lawyer for a referee who attempted suicide before a Bundesliga match last weekend says his client was suffering from depression

News agency dapd says lawyer Sven Menke wrote Friday that doctors diagnosed referee Babak Rafati with depression over recent says. Rafati believes the first symptoms surfaced 18 months ago and they have since intensified.

Menke’s statement says that “growing pressure to perform for him as a referee and the media pressure linked to that—in combination with the constant fear of making mistakes—became a bigger and bigger burden.”
