For the first time in 30 years ordinary Egyptians are allowed to vote in the Misr El Gedida secondary school for girls in Heliopolis, Cairo, after being the exclusive voting station of ousted president Mubarak and his family for three decades.
The polling station witnessed a huge turnout since it opened its doors for voters at 8am. They stood in long queues that extended outside the school for more than 3 kilometres.
Many voters waiting for their turn told MENA (Egypt's official news agency) that it was their first time to vote at the girls' school polling station after years of being unable to vote because they were denied access to what they called "Mubarak’s family voting station."
