Ten people were killed and five others were seriously injured in a road accident in the western part of the Cairo Ring Road on Friday, Al-Ahram Arabic reported.
According to Giza’s Security Directorate, the accident took place when vehicles stopped at the western junction with the 26 July Corridor after a collision between two other cars. A truck carrying bricks ended up running over six vehicles, including a micro-bus carrying passengers.
The driver of the truck was arrested and the prosecution are currently investigating the incident.
In 2015, Egypt saw 25,500 road fatalities, while the total number of car accidents was 14,500, according to a study published by official statistics body CAPMAS in August 2016.
The high rate of accidents is often attributed to poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure, and loosely enforced traffic regulations.
