Police officials say Monday's attack on Shia pilgrims in Latifiyah, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of the Iraqi capital, killed two and wounded three people. A medical official confirmed the toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the are not authorised to talk to the media.
The ritual, known as Ashura, marks the anniversary of the 7th century death of Imam Hussein. His death in a battle sealed Islam's historical Sunni-Shia split. Religious pilgrims are often targeted by Sunni extremists who claim that Shia are not true Muslims.
