Egypt and Lierse striker Mohamed "Dodo" Elgabas
Down by two goals against KV Mechelen, Egypt striker Mohamed Elgabas revived Lierse’s hopes by scoring a goal in the 66th minute, before Angolan striker Flavio Amado could snatch the equaliser in the 90th minute on Saturday night.
“I was fouled in the area and the referee had no hesitation. I kept my nerves cool and hit the goal; it revived my teammates’ hopes. The late equaliser was well reserved and I’m sure we would have won the game if it lasted a little bit longer,” the 24-year old striker was quoted as saying on Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad on Monday.
Lierse were outrun at the beginning of the game, allowing their visitors to get into the lead after only eight minutes, then grab the second early in the second half before accomplishing their fight-back.
“It was probably our worst 20 to 25 minutes of the season. There was no concentration or organisation at the beginning. But after my penalty we got back on the right track and showed our fighting spirit,” Elgabas, who scored his fifth goal of the season, added.
Lierse are currently in 14th place, just above the relegation zone, with three points ahead of bottom sides STVV and KVC Westerlo. They will travel to play Genk next Saturday on the 17th match day of the Belgian Jupiter League.
“We will play Genk on Saturday. In the first leg we were better than them but we couldn’t claim the full points of the game. I am sure we can get anything out of this game,” he concluded.
