Popular campaign issues list of Egypt's ex-regime figures with frozen UK assets

Popular Initiative to Retrieve Egypt's Money lists 19 Mubarak-era officials and relatives whose funds were frozen by UK authorities following last year's revolution

The Popular Initiative to Retrieve Egypt's Money (PIREM) has issued a list of 19 former regime officials and their families whose financial assets have been frozen in the United Kingdom, Al-Ahram reported on Sunday.

In March of last year, the UK Treasury's Assets Freezing Unit froze assets worth a total of some £42 million (roughly LE420 million) belonging to a handful of Mubarak regime officials. The move came in response to new EU regulations issued in the same month that called for the freezing of all funds owned or controlled by anyone found responsible for the misappropriation of public monies and those associated with them.

The list, announced by PIREM President Moataz Salahdin, targets 19 individuals, including former president Hosni Mubarak, his wife Suzanne, his two sons, and their wives. It also includes the former ministers of interior, tourism, and trade and housing, along with members of their families. Steel tycoon and former ruling party official Ahmed Ezz, along with his two wives, was also mentioned on the list.

Ahram Online failed to reach PIREM officials to confirm the list, which has been reported on other media outlets as follows:

3. Khadiga El-Gammal (wife of Gamal Mubarak)

4. Nagla El-Gazayerly (wife of former housing minister)

5. Habib El-Adly (former interior minister)

6. Julian Shawkat (wife of former tourism minister)

7. Ahmed El-Maghraby (former housing minister)

8. Ahmed Ezz (former NDP top official)

9. Haneya Fahmy (Ahram Online was unable to confirm this person's position)

10. Amir Zoheir Garana (son of former tourism minister)

11. Zoheir Garana (former tourism minister)
