Egyptian popular actor and director Mohamed Sobhi is currently building a new playhouse at his Sonbol City, located on the Cairo-Alexandria road near the Sphinx International Airport to set a new record in building theatres in Egypt, reported Ahram Arabic gate.
This is the fifth hall founded by the comedian, having built one in Alexandria, two in Cairo and one in Sonbol City. Sobhi is following in the footsteps of Egyptian theatre pioneers Naguib El-Rihani, Ismail Yassin, and others who built their own playhouses.
Sobhi's career started in the 1960s. He soon introduced many unforgettable works on stage, pairing with Egyptian iconic playwright Lenin El-Ramli for a long period.
While he collaborated with some of the country's veteran actors on stage, he established his own troupe to discover new talents some of whom have rose to stardom.
He also made a huge fan-base through his few but influential series including "Sonbol" and "Yawmeyat Wanis", which was aired between 1994 and 2013 with a total of about 300 episodes.
Sobhi has acted in over 10 films, including "Al-Karnak" (1975) and "Hona Al-Qahera" (1985).
The veteran artist is currently staging a play entitled "Khebetna" which was originally written in 2004 and its production was postponed several times before it was modified to better suit the current events.
