'Literature and the Body' is the topic of this year's Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival, featuring movie screenings, book discussions, exhibitions and concerts

Cairo Med Literary Festival

In its third year, the Cairo Mediterranean Literary Festival aims to open a dimension in tackling a sensitive taboo topic: the body. The festival is organized by Baad El-Bahr Cultural Association, which is a non-profit organisation founded in 2008 aiming to explore and develop various aspects of cultural life in Egypt.

The festival events will take place in different venues in Cairo in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute, the French Institute, the Cervantes Institute, Al-Mashrabia Gallery, the British Council, the Goethe Institute, Alitalia and Rising Stars.

The festival programme:

17 May - 7pm at the Italian Cultural Institute - Inaugural speech

17 May - 8pm at the Italian Cultural Institute - Fernanda Calati reads passages from the book “Corpo” (Body) by Tiziano Scarpa, with accompaniment by Alberto Zappalà (in Italian with on screen Arabic translation)

18 May - 6pm at the Italian Cultural Institute - “Il Corpo Sonoro” (The Sonorous Body). Introduction by Fernanda Calati of her workshop on the voice for actors and teachers. In Italian with limited places (please reserve by calling 25784494)

18 May - 6pm at Baad El-Bahr - Screening of the French movie The Intouchables

18 May - 7.30pm at the British Council - Screening of the movie “Dunia” by Lebanese director Jocelyne Saab (in Arabic with English subtitles)

18 May - 8pm at Baad El-Bahr - Screening of the movie “Un altro pianeta” (One Day In A Life)

18 May - 9pm at the British Council - Lebanese director Jocelyne Saab meets the public (in English with simultaneous translation in Arabic) 

19 May - 6pm at the Italian Cultural Institute -  Roundtable discussion, “Writing Today. The body and writing between desire and influences,” featuring Viola di Grado, Ahmed Naje and Amr Ezzat

19 May - 6pm at Baad El-Bahr - Screening of the movie "Questione di cuore" (Questions of the Heart)

19 May -  8pm at Baad El-Bahr - Screening of the movie "Lo mejor de mi" (The Best of Me)
