The gas line is located underneath the Ganzouri Bridge at the intersection of the Al-Nasr Road with Ahmed Fakhry Street in Nasr City, east of Cairo.
The fire erupted when a worker, who was repairing a nearby underground water pipeline, drove a vehicle into the gas line.
Three other workers were killed in the fire.
The fire was brought under control by personnel from Cairo’s civil protection service and the gas company, who halted the flow of gas through the line.
The broken line was closed for repair, with the gas flow directed to an alternative pipeline to keep the supply running for the district residents.
Security authorities said the worker responsible for the incident was arrested and the Public Prosecution launched an inquiry to identify the causes of the incident.
The prosecution also ordered an engineering committee to be formed to inspect the line and determined the damage.
