The rainfall, estimated at up to 250 mm (10 inches) within a few hours, led to extensive flooding and dangerous mudslides.
According to Libyan medical sources, the death toll from Hurricane Daniel has reached 25 individuals. Meanwhile, Al Arabiya satellite news channel reports that the fatalities in Derna alone has surged to 150.
Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed, leaving countless residents displaced.
The storm also wreaked havoc on the city's infrastructure, causing power outages, closing the Derna airport, and washing away roads and bridges. Schools and hospitals also suffered substantial damage.
Among the structures damaged in the floods is the Al-Sahaba Mosque – one of the city’s tourist attractions – sparking concerns about its preservation.
The two dams protecting the city, however, remained intact, preventing an even worse disaster.
On Saturday, Libyan authorities in the east of the country declared a state of emergency, suspending schools and closing shops in the city. The Derna city council enacted a 7pm-8am curfew and carried out evacuations in the worst hit areas.
As a precautionary measure, Libyan authorities closed four major oil ports, namely Ras Lanuf, Zueitina, Brega, and Es Sidra, for three days beginning on Saturday.
Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation declared a state of maximum alert in anticipation of the storm.
Storm Daniel continues to move east and will hit Egypt on Monday, bringing rains and bad weather to the western part of the country.
