An Egyptian source said the fuel would be delivered to the United Nations to facilitate the delivery of aid after trucks on the Palestinian side stopped operating for lack of fuel.
Witnesses at the Egyptian border reported that two additional fuel trucks were waiting to cross through the Rafah border into Gaza, Reuters reported.
Israel announced early Wednesday that it would allow UN trucks to refill at the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border later on Wednesday.
It said the decision was in response to a request from the United States, but gave no details on when the shipments are to be delivered, other than to say it is allowing 24,000 litres of fuel into Gaza, according to AP.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned Monday that its fuel storage facility in Gaza had run dry and that UNRWA would soon be forced to halt operations.
"No fuel has entered Gaza since 7 October, our trucks were not able to receive aid coming through the Rafah crossing today," UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini wrote on X late Tuesday.
Fuel shortages in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the death of dozens, including children, with the Palestinian health minister saying on Sunday that 23 out of 35 hospitals in Gaza have completely stopped working due to the depletion of fuel that generates electricity.
"As more time passes without fuel, we will lose most patients and infants in intensive care," the ministry spokesperson said on the same day.
