On Wednesday, the Egyptian cabinet approved a 30-day grace period for those who failed to transfer the deposit before the 30 April deadline.
In a statement on Thursday, the emigration ministry explained that expatriates who have registered on the application and obtained a registration number before the deadline can benefit from the extension.
It added that the extension applies to individuals who file petitions establishing that they failed to execute the transfer because they reside in countries distressed by international disputes.
The ministry will accept all petitions via the initiative's hotline or email, or through the ministry's official Facebook page.
The zero-customs car import initiative, launched in 2022, allows expatriates to bring one personal-use vehicle to Egypt without incurring customs duties or taxes, including the value-added tax (VAT).
Egyptians living abroad should make a five-year bank deposit in foreign currency.
After five years, expatriates can withdraw their money in Egyptian pounds according to the local currency exchange rate at the time of withdrawal, importing their vehicles without customs charges.
In April, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait said the initiative brought in over $750 million, with around 27,000 cars imported to the country.
Approximately 490,000 nationals living abroad have registered online for the initiative, and 250,000 import permits have been issued, Maait noted, adding that these permits are valid for five years.
