Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty stressed Wednesday the urgent need for action in Lebanon, Gaza, and Sudan during separate meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to address the ongoing regional crises, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement.

Abdelatty participated in the emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding the developments in Lebanon, where he attributed the tragedy in Lebanon to the “disgraceful failure of the UNSC in fulfilling its responsibility in stopping the ongoing year-long war in Gaza,” read the ministry's statement.

During the session, the foreign minister highlighted the necessity of fully implementing UNSC Resolution 1701 “in a comprehensive, non-selective manner and without discrimination between the parties addressed by the resolution.”

This resolution, according to the UN, enables displaced people to return to their villages and restart a political process to establish a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also emphasized that restoring stability in the Middle East relies on the full and immediate implementation of Security Council Resolution 2735, which outlines a three-phase plan for Gaza.

This plan includes an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid distribution, a permanent end to hostilities with full Israeli withdrawal and hostage release, and a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza, including the return of deceased hostages' remains.

“Egypt has consistently warned that the ongoing war in Gaza risks escalating into other regional conflicts, posing a significant threat to international peace and security throughout the Middle East,” said Abdelatty.

Ending this year-long bloodshed and implementing these UNSC resolutions are “essential steps to break free from the cycle of temporary ceasefires, which are bound to fail, as it is either a comprehensive cessation of all forms of fighting across all arenas or further collapses and a relentless expansion of conflict in a region that can no longer bear any more destruction.”

Egypt’s top diplomat affirmed that what is currently happening in Lebanon constitutes a complete act of aggression and a blatant violation of the sovereignty of a state that is a founding member of the United Nations, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and thousands of injuries.

“The situation has led to the forced displacement of tens of thousands of Lebanese citizens, in complete disregard of the UN Charter and violation of international law and international humanitarian law,” he said.

Egypt has consistently expressed its strong support for Lebanon in light of the Israeli attacks, reiterating its warning that this unjustified escalation could lead to catastrophic consequences for the region.

More than 600, including 50 children, were killed and hundreds injured in the Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon in the past 72 hours, marking the deadliest day of cross-border violence since the Israeli war on Gaza began.

The foreign minister concluded by stressing the need for the UNSC to fulfil its responsibilities and end the unacceptable catastrophe in Lebanon.

On the same day, FM Abdelatty also discussed the situation in Gaza in the Arab-Islamic Committee meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UNGA in New York.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of any practices that aim to separate Gaza and the West Bank, urging the necessity of implementing a two-state solution and establishing a Palestinian State along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also stressed the necessity of implementing an immediate ceasefire and ensuring an unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the strip.

Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, damaged most of Gaza’s infrastructure, and displaced the majority of the population.

Abdelatty expressed his gratitude for Guterres’s efforts to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The meeting was attended by the secretary-general of the Arab League, the secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and foreign ministers from several countries.

Abdelatty also participated in a ministerial meeting on Sudan, held alongside the 79th session of the UNGA.

He expressed Egypt’s proactive approach to collaborating with regional and international initiatives to defuse the conflict in Sudan.

The top diplomat also highlighted Egypt's intensive efforts towards solving the Sudanese crisis.

Egypt launched the Sudan Neighbouring Countries Summit in July 2023, participated in the International Paris Conference, and hosted a conference for Sudanese civil political forces in Cairo in July 2024 to reach a consensus on building comprehensive and lasting peace in Sudan without external interference.

He concluded his remarks by emphasizing the urgency of quickly ending the ongoing violent conflict, ensuring the success of the transitional phase in Sudan, and allowing humanitarian aid to reach innocent civilians while stressing the importance of preserving all Sudanese state institutions.
