The Palestinian Red Crescent said an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza school killed at least 28 people on Thursday, as Israel escalates its year-long war on Gaza.

"Palestine Red Crescent teams responded to 28 fatalities and 54 injuries following the Israeli occupation army's targeting of Rafida School," the organisation said, referring to a school in Deir el-Balah.

Israeli warplanes have repeatedly targeted schools, hospitals and places of worship sheltering thousands of Palestinians displaced by Israel's brutal war on Gaza.

The latest school strike comes just after Gaza's health ministry released the most recent death toll from Israel's assault on the besieged territory, with at least 42,065 people, mostly women and children, killed over the past year.

The toll includes 55 deaths in the previous 24 hours, according to the ministry, which reported 97,886 people have been wounded in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7, 2023.
