Ahly have agreed to release Brazilian striker Fabio Junior after he demanded a move away from the club.

“Junior asked us to terminate his contract without demanding his benefits and the club agreed,” Ahly football sector manager Hadi Khashaba was quoted as saying on the club’s official website.

The 28-year-old forward, who played for Portuguese side Naval, signed a three-year contract worth $1.2 million ($400,000 per season) last year but had a troubled period at the club. He was accused of lacking commitment and was punished numerous times for being absent without permission.

The Reds are preparing to play Nigeria's Sunshine Stars in the African Champions League semifinal on 6 October.

Titleholders Esperance of Tunisia take on four-time winners TP Mazembe of the DR Congo in the other semifinal clash.
