Egypt tests mobile traffic robot in New Administrative Capital

A mobile radar robot has been tested for the first time on the streets of Egypt’s New Administrative Capital as part of a trial aimed at supporting patrols in managing traffic flow and monitoring violations, according to multiple media reports.

Similar to the traditional fixed radar systems, the new robot operates with similar detection technology but offers the advantage of mobility. It can be repositioned as needed, expanding surveillance coverage, according to a security source, as reported by Al-Masry Al-Youm news website.

The trial phase is already underway in various areas, including key routes like the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, where the robot has been spotted operating alongside traffic officers, the source said. Authorities are currently evaluating their performance before considering a broader rollout.

Sada El-Balad news website reported that the robot is designed to reduce reliance on human personnel by assisting traffic officers in managing roads, minimising congestion, and enhancing overall street safety.

In addition to assessing patrols, the robot will help detect violations, including speeding, mobile phone use while driving, seatbelt non-compliance, unsafe tailgating, improper overtaking, unauthorised parking, and wrong-direction driving.

​The radar robot is expected to be integrated into Egypt’s traffic management system in the second half of 2025.

The move aligns with Egypt’s ongoing efforts to adopt modern technology and artificial intelligence across various sectors to keep pace with global developments.

As part of its broader modernisation efforts, the interior ministry is exploring the use of aerial drones to monitor traffic violations, assess road conditions, and capture aerial footage, Sada El-Balad reported.
