The closure affects traffic from the intersection of the Regional Ring Road with the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road to its intersection with the Cairo–Suez Desert Road.

According to the ministry, the extension is necessary to complete road maintenance and upgrade traffic control systems and safety measures as quickly as possible. The works are being carried out in line with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to prioritize public safety.

The extension follows an initial week-long closure that began on 8 July.

President El-Sisi ordered emergency maintenance on 5 July following two fatal accidents on the same road in Menoufia Governorate. That day, nine people were killed and 11 injured in a microbus collision near the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road.

Just days earlier, on 27 June, 18 young women died and others were injured when a microbus collided with a transport truck near Ashmoun, also in Menoufia.

The Regional Ring Road was built between 2012 and 2018, with the first phase completed in 2013. Sections heavily used by freight traffic have since required frequent repairs.
