Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA)
In a statement, the NTRA stated that prepaid fixed internet users will receive an additional data bundle equivalent to 50 percent of their original package, free of charge. Postpaid users will receive a 30 percent discount on their monthly bill.
The measure is part of the authority’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the fire and uphold users’ rights following widespread service disruptions.
The NTRA added that it continues to monitor service quality and is coordinating with operators to prevent future disruptions.
The fire, which broke out on 7 July on the seventh floor of the Ramses Exchange in downtown Cairo—a central hub in Egypt’s telecom network—resulted in four deaths and caused major interruptions to internet and telecom services across the country. The outage affected sectors ranging from banking and media to online trading and financial services.
In the immediate aftermath, the NTRA ordered service providers to compensate both mobile and fixed internet users with free data.
