In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the agreement would be a step toward lasting peace in eastern Congo, help improve humanitarian conditions, and support regional stability. Cairo also praised the roles of Qatar and the United States in facilitating the talks.
The Declaration outlines a roadmap for continued negotiations leading to a final peace deal, expected to be concluded by 18 August, in alignment with the Congo-Rwanda Peace Agreement signed on 27 June under US mediation.
This marks the first formal commitment between the DRC government and M23 since the rebel group captured key cities in the country’s east. Backed by Rwanda, M23 is one of over 100 armed groups operating in the conflict-torn, mineral-rich region.
Egypt reaffirmed its support for efforts to achieve peace and development across the continent, stressing the importance of upholding state sovereignty and resolving disputes through peaceful means.
Eastern Congo has endured decades of violence, triggering a protracted humanitarian crisis and mass displacement.
