“We are the family of Mohamed Abdel Hafeez. The information is accurate—my husband has been deported from Turkey,” a Facebook post published on Abdel-Hafeez’s account, his wife wrote on Thursday.
Earlier, sources told Al Arabiya News channel that security coordination had been underway between Cairo and Ankara regarding the extradition of several members of the terrorist-designated Muslim Brotherhood implicated in terror acts in Egypt.
According to the same sources, Egyptian authorities had submitted a security file to Turkey containing information on Muslim Brotherhood members who had planned terrorist attacks.
Mohamed Abdel Hafeez has been convicted in multiple cases, including a life sentence in Case No. 64/2016 (Military Criminal Court – North Cairo) for attempting to target high-profile figures and a second life sentence in Case No. 120/2022 (Military Criminal Court – East Cairo) for plotting to target the presidential aircraft and assassinate Lt. Col. Magdy Abdel-Razek.
This arrest and deportation come following the Ministry of Interior’s announcement Sunday that it had thwarted a terrorist plot by the Hasm movement, killing two suspects during a raid in Giza.
Hasm (Determination), short for Harakat Sawa’d Misr (Arms of Egypt Movement), is a terrorist-designated group that emerged in 2016 and claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting security forces, judges, and government officials.
According to the Egyptian Interior Ministry, Abdel-Hafeez was among the leading figures of the group currently residing in Turkey who were plotting to revive the group’s terrorist activities in Egypt.
