Keeping your home bug-free

Summer brings warmth, sunshine, and, unfortunately, bugs. As temperatures rise, insects become more active, often finding their way into our homes and disrupting our peace. While commercial insect repellents are widely available, they frequently contain harsh chemicals that may not be ideal for every household.

Your home bug-free

Fortunately, there are effective, eco-friendly alternatives. Using simple, natural ingredients and essential oils, you can create homemade solutions to repel a variety of common pests without compromising your health or the environment.

Here are some tried-and-true recipes to help you keep pests at bay all summer long.

All-purpose insect repellent spray: This versatile spray is easy to make and works against a wide range of insects. Mix a cup of water and a cup of witch hazel or apple cider vinegar with 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, 20 drops of lavender essential oil, and 20 drops of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake well before use. Spray around windows, doors, and other entry points, or directly onto surfaces where bugs tend to gather. The essential oil blend repels mosquitoes, flies, ants and more.

Homemade ant deterrent: Stop ants in their tracks with this natural solution. Combine a cup of water and a cup of white vinegar with 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and 10 drops of tea tree essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray along ant trails, doorways, and other areas where ants are spotted. The vinegar disrupts the ants scent trails, while the essential oils act as a deterrent.

Natural fruit fly trap: Fruit flies love overripe fruit, but this trap will catch them before they spread. Fill a small jar with apple cider vinegar then add a few drops of dish soap. The scent attracts the flies, and the soap breaks the surface tension, causing them to sink. Place the trap near fruit bowls or kitchen counters.

Homemade mosquito repellent: Mosquitoes are not only annoying but can also carry diseases. Keep them away from your skin and your space with this repellent. Mix a cup of witch hazel, 20 drops of citronella essential oil, 20 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil, and 10 drops of tea tree essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake well and apply to exposed skin before heading outdoors. You can also spritz it around doors and windows for added protection.

DIY roach killer: Tackle stubborn cockroaches naturally with this simple recipe. Mix an equal part of boric acid and sugar together and then add enough water to form a paste. Place small amounts of the paste under sinks, behind appliances, or anywhere roaches are seen. The sugar attracts the roaches, while the boric acid acts as a poison. Use with caution if you have pets or children, as boric acid can be toxic if ingested.

Essential oil flea spray for pets: Protect your furry friends with this gentle, chemical-free spray.

Mix a cup of water and a cup of apple cider vinegar with 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake well and lightly spray your pet’s fur, avoiding their face. Brush through to distribute evenly. You can also spray their bedding and carpets for added flea protection.

With these homemade remedies, you can enjoy a bug-free home while keeping your environment safe and chemical-free. Embrace the natural way to stay comfortable this summer.
